Mariel Barnes earned her PhD in government at Cornell University. Her research examines institutional change and stasis, specifically why liberal ideas gain traction within economic institutions and their derivative epistemic communities. Mariel earned an MA in international relations from the University of Chicago and a BA in politics and international relations and history from the University of New South Wales. She was a Mercatus Center Adam Smith Fellow during the 2015-2016 academic year and a Visiting Dissertation Fellow in the 2020-2021 academic year.
